In Texas, you must wait 72 hours after the county clerk issues your marriage license before you can get married. This is a state law requirement.

How the 72-Hour Rule Works

• The 72-hour clock starts when the county clerk issues the license — not when you apply for it.

• The license is typically valid for 90 days from issuance; if you don’t use it within that time, it expires and you’ll need to apply for a new one.

• Once the 72hr wait period has been met, the ceremony can be performed anywhere in Texas.

Can the Waiting Period be Waived?

    You can legally skip the 72-hour wait under certain conditions:

• You complete a Texas-approved premarital education course — Both parties must present and show proof of completion of the approved course when applying for the license.

• Active-duty military or other limited statutory exemptions may apply.

• A written judge’s waiver can also remove the waiting period (rare cases).

If you have a waiver for the 72hr waiting period, you must present it with your marriage license.

Only if that is what you want. If you have written your own vows, you are more than welcome to have those included in your ceremony. However, if you don’t have vows prepared, we have several ceremony options to choose from. Your planner will help you select what compliments your love story.

Handfasting is a beautiful and meaningful tradition in which the couple’s hands are gently bound with a cord to symbolize unity, commitment, and the joining of two lives. It is traditionally performed with poignant, meaningful and non-traditional vows that make this ceremony uniquely touching. However, it can be incorporated into a traditional ceremony with traditional vows. This ceremony ends with the cords beautifully knotted by the couple for a lovely and timeless symbol of their bond.  This is where the phrase: “Tying the Knot” comes from.
